How to redact personal information from a prompt

  1. Load the local models. Complete the one-time setup above. Your text stays in the tool while detection runs on your device.
  2. Paste and review. After setup, pasting starts detection. Select each highlight to see why it was found and choose Keep or Redact.
  3. Copy only after checking. Apply redaction, read the entire preview, and copy your reviewed prompt. Remove any confidential context the detector missed.

A simple example: keep the company, remove the contact details

Fictional original: “Ask Maya Chen at Cedar Studio to reply to maya.chen@example.com.”

After choosing Keep for Cedar Studio: “Ask [PERSON] at Cedar Studio to reply to [EMAIL].”

You choose what remains in the prompt. Check that the kept details and surrounding context are appropriate to share.

Questions about local PII redaction

What is prompt redaction?

Prompt redaction replaces personal or confidential details in text before you send it to an AI service. This tool detects supported details and replaces selected items with labels such as [PERSON] and [EMAIL], while keeping the surrounding text.

What personal information can I remove?

The models look for names, organizations, email addresses, phone numbers, addresses, and other supported sensitive details. This is a text tool: paste an excerpt from an email, note, or document. It does not edit PDF files or images, and it cannot identify every kind of confidential business information.

Does my original text leave my device?

Your original text is processed locally in this browser, not uploaded for redaction. Setup downloads models from Hugging Face and runtime files from jsDelivr. The tool page does not load website analytics. Copy places the reviewed result on your clipboard; you decide where to paste it.

Can I keep a name or company in the prompt?

Yes. Select a highlighted item and choose Keep this text. Select it again to switch back to Redact this text. After changing a decision, generate a new preview. Anything you keep remains in the copied result.

Is this the same as anonymizing a prompt?

Not necessarily. Removing direct identifiers can leave context that still identifies a person or client. Detection can also miss details. Use the tool to help review a prompt, then check the full result before sharing it. Redaction alone does not guarantee anonymity or regulatory compliance.

What does my browser need?

A compatible browser with WebGPU, several GB of free memory, and an initial model download of about 1.1 GB. Model files are cached when available. The models focus on English; this tool does not promise reliable detection in every language.

Can I use it with ChatGPT, Claude, or other AI tools?

Yes. Copy the reviewed text and paste it into your chosen tool. This website does not read or rewrite another service’s prompt box and does not send anything to an AI service automatically. For a private panel inside ChatGPT, explore the Privacy Redactor plugin on the Procurato homepage.
